A Hyatt Weekend in Scottsdale: Gainey Ranch

Over the weekend, Chet and Kassie organized a quick vacation in Scottsdale and we stayed at the Hyatt at Gainey Ranch. Kassie was there to celebrate her 24th birthday (Happy Birthday Kassie!) and for the most part it was what one expect: lots of drinking, lots of hanging out by the pool, and lots of fun!Unfortunately, I didn't take many pictures this trip...don't really want to bring a camera to the pool and also because I was too busy partying. :) These first two pictures are from the Scottsdale Hyatt website. We arrived on Friday in the early afternoon and immediately hit the drinks and the pool. I'm not a big fan of sand volleyball, but I could definitely play pool volleyball for hours. I think it's 'cause I'm not good at bumping, but in the pool you're mostly setting the ball. Pool basketball was also a lot of fun and the hoop was at a good height where you couldn't just dunk on people all the time. This Hyatt also has a really fun corkscrew slide that is actually pretty aggressive. Had to ride that thing at least twice. :D
Friday was Kassie's birthday, so we all went to Camarone's Mexican Grill for dinner. Later than night we hit up the Devil's Martini in Old Town Scottsdale. I've always heard about it, I guess some people don't like it, but we all really enjoyed ourselves. There was no cover that night (kinda unheard of for a club in Scottsdale, although probably 'cause it wasn't crazy busy) and there were also 2-for-1 drink specials. I started the night off by ordering a round of Tic-Tacs for our party of 10. If you've ever hung out at the bar with Chet or myself, you'll know that we're notorious for buying shots and drinks for everyone and keeping them coming. I was really happy at the end of the night to see that I had only spent $70 even though I had bought about 20+ drinks.Friday was definitely our rage night...I personally got so trashed that when we made it back to the hotel, I passed out on the bathroom floor. It was super scary when I woke up still severely drunk to find myself in a room I had no idea where anything was. The bathroom door was closed and I was poking around for what felt like an hour trying to find a light switch...only to remember the next morning that the light switches were located outside the bathroom, LOL. I eventually found my way to the bed next to a passed-out Jon. I laid there for what was probably another hour, freezing my ass off and struggling to find a blanket. I was like, "where the eff is the effing blanket!?" Well, turns out that the blanket was bright white like the bed sheets and Jon finally woke up and was looking for the same thing. Me: "Jonny, where are the blankets!?" Jon: "Oh my god, we're on top of them!" After finding the blankets, my drunk ass could finally get some comfortable sleep. Before I passed out, I somehow had the presence of mind to take my multivitamin, take out my contacts, and change into some sleeping clothes. But that didn't help the small hangover I'd have the next day. I tried Chet's recommendation of the Bloody Mary, which helped a little, but I wasn't planning on drinking for most of Saturday anyway since I had plans to treat my parents and my sister's family to dinner, a late Father's Day celebration. We went to Crazy Buffet on Priest and Elliot, which is decent in terms of chinese buffets.
Saturday night was pretty low key. We pretty much hung out at the resort all night. However, about 12:30 rolled around, Ben and I were hungry, and I knew there was a Jack-in-the-Box at Scottsdale and Shea. So we drove over there, only to pass by Ernie's bar and randomly make a short appearance. I stayed for a drink, ran into a couple friends, got hit on by a really drunk girl, and watched some very entertaining karaoke. Eventually we got our Jack and headed back to the hotel, but nothing like a random stop at a Scottsdale bar, right?
The next day we ate at Lolo's Chicken and Waffles then headed back to Tucson, which wrapped up a very nice "staycation" (stealing your word here Matt, but should mention that Ben and Jon hate that term). Next stop, Dana Point for the 4th of July weekend!!!

Win Percentages: My Competitive Nature

Before you read my blog entry for the day, don't look at it like me trying to brag...I'm really not like that. In fact, if you know me, I'm usually pretty humble and hardly ever talk about my accomplishments. If you disagree, let me know, and I'll remember to be more modest next time. :) Okay, with that disclaimer out of the way, on to blogging!

For anyone who knows me, I'm a pretty competitive person. I'm especially competitive when it comes to games that I've been playing for a while. If you give me enough time with something and I enjoy it enough, I usually learn to play the game at a fairly high level. I was randomly thinking about some of my achievements and decided I'd share it on the blog.

Let's take my oldest example first, Westwood's online tournament for the '96 RTS hit: C&C Red Alert. This tournament was ladder based and head-to-head only; no teams. If your opponent had a higher rank, you had more points to win (I think it was up to 40) and less to lose. Playing someone with a much lower rank didn't yield many points and put at risk a lot if you lost. I started in '98 of August and at first, just thought of the tourney as a fun way to kill time after high school. But eventually my competitive nature kicked in and other players noticed my potential and started mentoring me. As you can see via my monthly log below, I gradually got better, posted a 57-9 record in January of '99, and ultimately that was the month I won it all. The 1st place prize was a whopping 4GB hard drive that I ended up selling for $90. LOL. I wasn't in it for the prizes tho'. I really just wanted to have the pride of claiming myself as a champion in a world-wide gaming tournament. Shortly after winning it all, I retired and moved on.
My Win Percentage for Red Alert: 85.2%At work I'll occasionally have some down time and if I'm not watching baseball or playing on Asobrain with my office mate, I like to load up some Freecell. I enjoy Freecell the most out of the Windows games 'cause I feel it requires the most strategy. Every game has a solution, so I know I won't inevitably get screwed by a bad game, which can happen in Solitaire.
My Win Percentage for Freecell: 91.5%Another old game that I'll still play is another RTS hit from '98: StarCraft. I handle this a little differently than Red Alert however. When I play online, I only play if I have someone else to team up with. That's usually Johnathan and occasionally Matt. We usually play 3v3 games against random opponents and I've played sooo many games that I basically have my entire build order memorized from start to finish. Experience is invaluable in this game (I've literally seen everything) and it allows me to laxly play this game but at a very high level.
My Win Percentage for StarCraft: 96.4%Enough about PC games, what about 'em consoles? I don't have any records of my superior Goldeneye skills back in the day, but I'm sure my high school friends could tell you plenty of stories. A newer game that I had really gotten into is MarioKart for the Wii. I've always been a stud at MarioKart and the Wii really opened a new level of gaming for me. I don't really have any friends who play enough and can keep up with me, but there are definitely some good players out there online. I'm not sure what constitutes as a "Win" in this game. I figure you get a win if you get 3rd or better when there are 8 players, or 4th or better with 10-12; something like that.
My Win Percentage in MarioKart: 75.9%Games are one thing though. It could just be that I was blessed with mad reaction and hand-eye coordination skills like most Asians. ;) Another "game" I'm really passionate about is Fantasy Sports. I referenced to my Fantasy Profiles in a previous blog entry, but figured I'd revisit it here and discuss more winning percentages. I have two profiles that I use. My private ID (ATrain64) is for competitive money leagues with friends whereas my public ID (AsDgSaGsR) is mostly for fun. I really take my fantasy sports seriously; not denying how dorky that sounds. I mostly just do the major American sports: baseball, basketball, and football. I check on fantasy and sports statistics everyday and it's really a big part of my life. The amount of time I put into it pays off in terms of winning. Over the two profiles I've accumulated 109 trophies out of 209 leagues so far (a trophy is awarded for a 3rd place finish or greater). Considering I really don't have any control over the performance of real-life athletes and am doing nothing but picking which one is on my fantasy team, I think the fact that I place 3rd or better in more than half the leagues I'm in is pretty damn good.
My Win Percentage for Fantasy Sports: 52.2%So when it comes to games, I really like to win. That's not saying I can't play a game, lose, and not be sore about it. There are many games out there that I just downright suck at and I know I'm gonna lose, so it doesn't bother me. Also, with ridiculous win percentages comes great responsibility. Rubbing victories in someone's face is definitely not cool; no one likes an arrogant asshole. :D

And there are definitely times I wish I weren't so competitive. Sometimes when I feel I should've won, I really get down on myself. But in the grand scheme of everything, it's just a game anyway! Right?

Victory is Mine!

It's time for another quick Duncan blog (heh, he lives such an uneventful life; definitely not as exciting as Jordan over there). Duncan is 5-years-old now, and for those first 5 years I had always fed him in the morning. However, as one would suspect, this led to him incessantly meowing and pouncing on the bed in the morning when he was hungry and expecting to eat, but while I wanted to sleep in. I don't know why I put it up with it for so long to be honest. It wasn't until I had someone over and he was doing that (I felt bad for the girl, but I guess it didn't bother her) that I decided to make a change. So for the last several weeks I have been slowly switching him to an evening diet. For the first week I would just feed him a little in the morning and then feed him the rest in the evening when I got home from work. Now I've completely omitted the morning meal and force him to wait for food 'til I get home. It must've been really hard on the guy, but hey, I should win the battle with my cat, right? And now he's bearable in the morning...not expecting to eat for until several hours after I wake up. W00T! Victory is mine!!!

P.S. I love you Duncan.

Expanding my Recipe Book

Last night I made chicken lo mein for the first time. I have a new goal and that's to try and make a new dish every other week, which is about how often I make a run to the grocery store. I've always thought of myself as a pretty decent cook and what I'd really like to do now is expand my knowledge of recipes.

Last night's chicken lo mein turned out pretty good...you can ask Ben or Jon what they think. It was kinda surprising how much work went into the preparation though. There were like 12 ingredients and you'd think it'd be simpler than that. Anyway, I give it 3.5 stars out of 5. Topping it off with some cilantro was definitely a huge plus, but I think next time I'll throw in some beef as well. Now the question becomes, what should I make next time?

San Carlos!

For the Memorial Day Weekend, Chet and Kassie invited me out to Kassie's parents' condo in San Carlos, Mexico. This was my second time in Mexico and I'm so happy I went on what was an amazing trip! San Carlos is about 300 miles south of Tucson and their condo sits literally on the beach.
The condo is way nice and is a 3 bedroom, 3 bath home in this tropical paradise. It's pretty loaded too. We got there on Friday and set up camp in the afternoon. If you've never vacationed with Chet and Kassie, you definitely are missing out because they really know how to have fun and were super-prepared for this trip. And if you know Chet, you probably have an idea of how much heavy-drinking ensued this weekend. ;)
I look at San Carlos as more of a vacation getaway spot for couples and families...lot less of the party scene as compared with places like Rocky Point or Cabo. We stayed on a private beach, which kept it from being overcrowded and allowing us plenty of room to set up our cornhole game. Jon and I made a very formidable team that went undefeated for the weekend (w00t!), although the last game we played versus Chet and Ham was awfully close - so close that we needed a 5-point turn from me to win the game 21-19 at the last second a la Kobe (sad the Suns lost in game 6 btw...oh and the Magic losing also sucked).
San Carlos has some great food. A couple of the days we ate this one outdoor taco shop called JJ's. They serve caramelos similar to the ones at BK in Tucson (oooo, jealous Matt!?). And while I'll always be loyal to the caramelos at BK, these were definitely awesome in their own right. There's also this clown that works at JJ's who when you asked for something would respond "Why not!?" and "Who cares!?" in a high-pitched voice that was quite hilarious. Jon picked it up as his new catch phrase. Just ask him to say it for you sometime since he does it really well, so well that I kinda want to punch him in the face for overusing it lol. Other good meals in San Carlos included shrimp quesadillas at the Soggy Peso and the various seafood dishes at Los Arbolitos. On Saturday evening we went on a 2-hour booze-cruise around San Carlos that included unlimited margaritas. :) One of the highlights was a bunch of dolphins coming up and swimming with us, but for the most part it was just a relaxing boat ride on the ocean and seeing the various sights of the area.Saturday night was the only time we really went out to see any of the San Carlos nightlife, but it was definitely busy. We started out at Froggy's where they had a live band, but a majority of our crew started getting tired and began cashing in early. Chet, Walter, and myself were the only ones left who made it to the grossly-packed club called Voga. Fortunately it wasn't bad to get a drink and the three of us proceeded to get completely wasted until 3 in the morning. I actually felt pretty shitty on Sunday morning from drinking so hard but you should know that I can't be held down forever. Some credit for my speedy recovery is owed to the ramen noodle bowls that Ham brought down with him haha. By afternoon I was feeling great and we met up with Chet's coworkers, who were also in San Carlos for the weekend, at their parents' home also along the beach. They had a jetski that we all took turns on and for me it was my first time but hopefully not the last!We also sampled some freshwater clams on the beach and man were they tasty. The guy opened them up with a knife, which really takes some skill, and then they were served with lime juice, crackers, and your choice of hot sauce and/or ketchup. They were so delicious that we all couldn't help but get two samples each. The barbecue that followed was amazing as well, but I always love carne asada. :)Monday was mostly a wind-down day, but there was never a dull moment on this trip. In the morning, Jon and I took Chet's Yamaha Rhino offroading in the various desert and beach trails in San Carlos. Offroading is definitely a big thing there. That Rhino was badass and you can take the it up to about 45 mph. Out of the entire trip, I think I had the most fun on the Rhino. So much that I'm actually considering getting one for myself (maybe a Razor since they can go over 60 mph)...but unfortunately offroading in Arizona is not as easy to get to as in San Carlos. *sigh*
And now for your random story of the trip. On the last day we were hanging out on the beach and tossing the frisbee around. This older lady, likely in her 40s, approaches us and asks if she can play. We toss the frisbee around with her for a while and eventually she asks us where we're from, when and how we're going back, etc, etc. Her friends weren't leaving until Wednesday and she wanted to get back on Tuesday so we actually gave her a ride back to Tucson on the way home, lol. Very random, but she was cool and not crazy (*whew*!), and the ride home was probably more pleasant with her around, but I've always been advocate of "the more the merrier" anyway!
So overall it was a really fun trip and thanks to Chet and Kassie for inviting me along!
